There are many videos on the market now for training retrievers.  Here are some that we think are a cut above the rest.  The best single course on training retrievers has recently been released by Shawn Dustin (www.retrieverfever.com) of DUSTIN RETRIEVERS.  He has created three of the best produced videos I have ever seen.  They are very well illustrated and feature great digital video quality.  He uses time tested methods for obtaining great results.  If you plan to buy only one training course, this will probably be your best choice.  It will give you a look at the "big picture" of retriever training from starting out with your pup to advanced training and hunt test preparation.

We also recommend the Richard A. Wolters videos and DVDs.  They feature Charles Jurney, a professional trainer from BEAVERDAM KENNELS (www.finisheddog.com) in Terrell, North Carolina.  Charlie teaches the traditional methods of training that were pioneered by Richard A. Wolters many years ago.  It is training which will help anyone who wants to train their dogs to be obedient and a great retriever.  Charlie trains many dogs every year that acquire their hunt test titles in both the UKC, AKC and NAHRA circles.  He is at the top of most people's list when it comes to retriever training.  These videos do not feature the more modern approach of electronic collar conditioning and training methods.  They are the most widely sold and viewed training instruction in the world today.

If you want to get into serious electronic collar training, the follow-up to Charles Jurney's videos is the Top Dog series.  Top Dog and Top Dog II are really great videos for e-collar training.  They feature professional trainer Tony Hartnett who teaches you how to gain the maximum advantage from the e-collar.  They are well produced and easy to learn from.

All retriever training is achieved from a foundation of the basic obedience commands sit/stay, here (come) and heel.  The next major area of training and the most important is "force-fetching."  Tri-Tronics has produced the best detailed method of how to force-fetch a dog that I have seen.  The first tape teaches you how to train the command "hold" and the second tape teaches you how to train the command "fetch", in depth.  These tapes feature professional trainers Jim and Phyllis Dobbs.  If you are going to force-fetch your dog, this is great training for you.  If you don't know how to properly force-fetch your dog, you can do more damage to your dog than good.  If you can't do this process yourself, you should consult a professional trainer for help due to the importance of doing the job right the first time.  Advanced retriever training is not possible without a strong foundation of basic obedience and force-fetching.

If your not looking to use your dog for hunting and serious retrieving, but do want some level of training, you may want to consider the video Family Dog.

These videos are available from the above mentioned web sites or locally from Dogs Afield located in Atlanta, Georgia.  You can visit their web site at www.dogsafield.com to place an order for any of these videos or DVDs.
